“SO YOU’RE A DRAGON?”

Dee was riding Flint’s shoulder again as we climbed back up through the sewers. She turned around backwards to face me as I walked behind him.

“… I guess,” I said, still not sure I could make myself believe it. “It could all still be bullshit.”

“Eh, Mediator Ammolite doesn’t strike me as the type to bullshit,” Dee said, shrugging. “Still, that’s freaking wild, right? You’re a whole actual dragon! I mean, you don’t exactly look like I’d imagine…”

“It’s the sweatpants, isn’t it?” I said sarcastically, hitching them up again. I was having even more trouble keeping them on now that the legs were soaked up to the knee from wading through the sewer. My boots were soggy again, too.

“Nah, I just imagined a dragon would be bigger, you know?” Dee said, gazing into the distance as she imagined a more appropriate dragon. “And all green and scaly and such. Something badass.”

“Yeah, I’d probably look more badass if I could stop setting fire to my clothes,” I muttered. “But if it makes you feel any better, in the memory Ammolite showed me most of them did have scales and claws and such. A couple of them looked straight out of a fairy tale, like big reptile faces and tails and wings, the whole nine yards.”

“Holy shit,” Dee said, her eyes sparkling. “That’s awesome! Why don’t you look like that?”

“Maybe because it’s all made up and I’m not actually a dragon?” I suggested, opening my arms in invitation for a better explanation. Instead, my pants just tried to slide off again. I bit my lip as I retied the knot, blowing hair out of my face. Dee crossed her arms, not buying it. I had to admit the argument felt pretty thin to me too. I just didn’t know how to be sure. I’d spent so long refusing to really deal with even being a changeling. That I might be a dragon… the concept was too weird and frightening to get a grip on. Every time I tried to really consider it, I kept shying away again like a nervous horse. As long as I treated it as just a hypothetical possibility, it was easier to handle.

“A lot of the little kids didn’t have scales,” I said after a moment when I couldn’t stop thinking about it. “In the memory. The younger ones looked pretty much human. They got more dragon-y as they got older.”

“So, what, you haven’t gone through dragon puberty yet?” Dee asked, raising an eyebrow.

“No,” I said, still thinking it through. “The people my age all had scales and horns and stuff. I don’t know. Maybe they’re like… hidden or something. Ammolite said the dragons that survived the initial attack were hunted. If I’m alive, then some of them must have escaped and managed to hide what they were. They couldn’t exactly do that with big-ass bat wings.”

“Like a permanent glamour then?” Dee summarized. “Shouldn’t you be able to tell? If you had some kind of concealment on you, someone would definitely have noticed.
